Are you pyLinkedIn?

August 19th, 2007 Posted in Personal, Programming, Python

Earlier this week I was having a small discussion with Doug Hellmann - I had read his announcement about the PyMotw being picked up by OnLamp guys, and saw the LinkedIn link in his blog, we connected and started chatting.

A few months ago, Grig had made a similiar post to this - talking about Python-People connecting on Linked in, and I've slowly been connecting to people within the community since then.I mentioned to Doug that I think python people connecting is a good move - many of us don't have "python" jobs - instead, we use Python at a decidedly "not python" job, where Python is one skill of many1.

Networking in this fashion can help other python-community people find contacts and jobs and the like. There is a Python-Wiki LinkedIn page - and there was some discussion around making a Python group, which is a good idea.If you're a Pythonista/Pythoneer and want to connect, see my profile hereI'm also on Facebook thanks to James Tauber - but I'm still trying to figure out how to use that.

Update to add some moreTennessee Leeuwenburg adds some thoughts: PyLinkedIn - his point has merit, and should be considered when adding connections.

  1. Although, I've managed to make python the second-most-used language where I work []

I know I am getting way ahead of myself here. But I will take this as more than coincidence.

Currently the LinkenIn groups are not accepting new groups. This is because they are re-tooling the group framework and are going to release an API. I know this because Van Lindburg tried to sign up for a group for PyCon08. It should be ready in time however.

The plan is to have LinkedIn integrated into the PyCon08 web site, along with many other social networking sites. One unique feature of the LinkedIn integration is the connection for those who are hiring. Not just attendees will be in the group, also companies looking for talent and those representing them will be there. At least that is the plan.

You might want to give Facebook more time to sink it. I think it’s a better venue for this sort of thing because it facilitates actual communication between “friends” (the equivalent of a LinkedIn “connection”). There are already Python groups on Facebook

The possible downside of FaceBook is the ubiquity of access. LinkedIn is more business network focused.

Just got an update through the grapevine. The release data for the new groups management is slated for the end of September. There is no date set for the release of the API.

  4. Doug Says:

I like the idea of using the “group” organization instead of having everyone link directly to everyone else, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for them to reactivate the feature.

I nominate Jesse to set up a “Python Developers” group. :-)

Dangit. I got volunteered. I created a “python community” organization, but without groups, we’re stuck with direct-connects.

Great idea. Also blogged my reaction to it on Doug Hellman’s post about this idea.

An easier way to do it might be to put “Python Community” under “Groups and Associations” in other. The newest release of LinkedIn allows people to invite each other based upon common groups. I also think that listing the “Python Community” under groups and associations is a better representation of what we are doing than a “None” position in the Community.

On the other hand, I suppose Guido could put “BDFL” as his position in the community…

  8. jesse Says:

That’s exactly what I am going to do/move to - I’ve already added “Python Community” as a group association. I’ll be amending my post and talking about it more as soon as I have a moment
