Hooray, retirement!

IMG_1702I don’t talk politics or current events here - mainly because I’d come off a a Lolbertarian whack-job, but I just had a serious “what in the crap?! moment when I checked my 401k:

Personal Rate of Return from 01/01/2008 to 10/09/2008 is -41.9%

This is one of the moments I look at my daughter and think about the future and get really sullen, so instead, I’m going to go back to solving technical problems as I can’t even rationally discuss this in my own head.

You might consider re-balancing your 401k after its value rebounds (don't sell). In general if you do worse then the market or are not beating it you are not diversified enough.

    Article on diversification:

The DOW has lost 35% in that time period: http://finance.google.com/finance?chdnp=1&chdd=...
  • Ironically, I *am* diversified. I've got a pretty good mix by all rights, including international stuff - it seems that everything is tanking (I was walking through the fund list this morning)

    Jesse,
Thanks. This actually made me laugh, and it's tough to laugh right now . . .
